Banksy’s Newest Piece: A New Version of "Madonna and Child"

Recently, the anonymous British artist Banksy had come out of the blue and posted on Instagram. Given that he has not said or done anything publicly for over four months, this comes as a surprise to art fans around the world.

The Piece

The piece includes a mother and a baby. This is without a doubt a reference to the painting “Madonna and Child” by Duccio. The picture depicts a woman in cloth with her left breast sticking out while holding a baby in her arms. The tip of the woman’s breast, however, is replaced by a rusty metal pipe. The child, on the other hand, has a distraught and terrified look. Nevertheless, because of the lack of information given by the artist in the description, fans rapidly sought to locate this picture and discern the meaning behind the work.

Many believed that the sewage pipe represents a rifle shot. A nipple symbolizes the negative impact of war, the struggles of mothers’ new-born children, or even the dark side of religion. Having said that, everyone seems to have a unique interpretation of the work. Some judged that the placement of the piece was poor, with the angle of the pipe being off from the woman’s breast, while others criticized the lack of imagination presented.

After more information surfaced about this work, it is now commonly believed that the picture is a cropped version of the original work, titled Madonna and Child, which was auctioned off in February 2024. It should be noted that currently there is no concrete evidence to prove this point. Though a picture that shows a framed work with the piece spayed-painted on a piece of galvanized steel, the signs are there.

As a side note, Banksy had actually once repainted his version of “Madonna and Child”, but with a little twist. He used an iPod. The artist made this some time ago because that was the time when he delved deep into the repainting of past masterpieces with oil painting.
