Banksy’s Newest Graffiti: A Criticism of the Legal System?
Just days after almost 900 were arrested at the Palestine Action protest in Parliament Square, Banksy has created a new art piece right outside the Royal Courts of Justice. The protest was in support of Palestine Action, a British pro-Palestinian network with the goal of ending Israeli apartheid. Let’s explore the art piece and Banksy’s message behind it.
The Piece
The work is placed on an external wall of the Queen's Building, which is part of the Royal Courts of Justice complex. It depicts a judge in a court outfit with a gavel in hand, attacking a protester lying on the ground, trying to defend himself with a blank placard stained with blood. It criticizes the recent incident where almost 900 protestors, who were voicing their opposition to the Israeli government's actions, were detained due to their blocking streets and disrupting public transport. As the authorities emphasized, the protests were peaceful but significantly disruptive.
Banksy’s new art piece sparks reflections on the ongoing tensions surrounding the Israel-Palestine conflict, and whether it was appropriate to detain the protestors.

However, moments after Banksy completed his art piece, it was quickly surrounded by sheets of plastic and metal barriers, guarded by security officials; some claim that the work is also under surveillance underneath a CCTV camera.
