Le Feuvre & Roze: The Collaboration Between the Gallery and Invader
read more
The art world thrives on innovation and collaboration, and street artists are a prime example. One street artist that stands out is Invader, renowned for his pixelated art aesthetic, inspired by the 80s classic arcade games. Apart from being a street artist, Invader has also taken his art to galleries with his collaboration with Le Feuvre & Roze, the Paris-based gallery, bringing Invader's work to a broader audience.
What is Le Feuvre & Roze
Le Feuvre & Roze gallery, founded in 2005 by Franck Le Feuvre and co-directed since 2018 with Jonathan Roze, represents around fifteen French and international artists with their gallery located in France. The gallery aims to create strong bonds between artists and collectors, promoting their work to collectors, institutions, and art lovers. The gallery focuses on visual art that conjures substance and form, ensuring artwork establishes a dialogue with the viewer without revealing everything. It also emphasizes substance, allowing for regular questioning, discovery, and inspiration. The gallery includes both budding and experienced artists, which fosters collector fulfillment by increasing the relevance of its work.
The Origins
For a couple of months, Franck Le Feuvre, the founder of Galerie Le Feuvre and co-director of Le Feuvre & Roze, had been sending messages to Invader through an intermediary, talking about how much he was inspired by his project and his artworks. Le Feuvre was also bitter about the artist having no representation in Paris, or even, in France, as local fans and audiences had to go overseas to enjoy his exhibitions.
After continuous persistence, Invader and Le Feuvre finally collaborated. In early 2009, a scooter covered in stickers stopped by. The motorist stepped forward, with his helmet and sunglasses on, looking through the gallery window. Though Le Feuvre may have never met the artist himself, he immediately knew who the motorist was, it was Invader, in which he said “I was passing this way.”
The two chatted for a while, then they parted ways. Invader left without making any promises, and maybe, he would never be back. However, a few weeks later, he did come to see Franck again. This time, Invader was planning to exhibit some of his works at the gallery. Several meetings took place, and Invader finally decided to entrust the gallery with some of his works.
“He does not commit himself lightly, he is aware that he is an important artist.”
-Invader: Part 3, Le Feuvre and Roze
Urban art, a transgressive and avant-garde style, gained popularity in Paris' eighth arrondissement. Despite the Le Feuvre & Roze gallery being initially small in size, Invader understood the need for other art media forms. Street art is becoming increasingly trendy internationally, making the displaying of temporary installations in a gallery a significant milestone in contemporary art collections.
Invader: 1000
Since 2009, Le Feuvre & Roze have been representing Invader in France.
In 2012, the gallery first co-organized the exhibition 1000 alongside Invader to celebrate the 1000th Invader mosaic installed in the streets of Paris. The exhibition featured Alias, which is a replica of mosaics installed on the roads. Apart from the usual ceramic tiles, Invader’s pioneered style of RubikCubism was also shown in various works.
For this exhibition, the gallery that partnered with Invader also issued an Exhibition Catalogue titled 1000, the same as the exhibition, which featured pictures and descriptions of the exhibition. The book itself has a soft cover, 52 pages, and is sized 22 x 22 cm. It is monolingual and available in French only.
Invader: Masterpieces
In 2017, Invader's second exhibition, Invader: Masterpieces was held at the gallery after the official partnership between the artist and the gallery was over. The exhibition was based on 4 ceramics on panels that were made in 1997, which could be among the first batch of ceramics made. The four ceramics from 1997 had to be restored, as they had spent twenty years outside decaying. These pieces, never seen before in public, formed the spine of the exhibition, showing some of the major pieces created by Invader in his early days as a street artist.
Similar to the past exhibition, the gallery released an Exhibition Catalog for Invader, titled Masterpieces, with a hardcover and 96 pages, size 27 x 21 cm. However, Invader didn’t mention this book in his list of books, possibly due to his lack of participation in the catalog, and would not like to claim the credit from the gallery. As a side note, the cover of the book is one of the 1997 pieces made by Invader.
Invader: Part 3
In 2022, five years after Invader: Masterpieces, the gallery presents Invader: Part 3, the third exhibition of the trilogy. The exhibition uncovers works that are representable to the artist, such as Rubik's Cubes, Aliases, Invasion Guides with ceramics, Invasion Kits, and much more. A lot of variations in Invader’s works could be seen in this series of exhibitions, ranging from the usual ceramic-tiled mosaics to brave works of RubikCubism.
The Invader: Part 3 once again has its own Exhibition Catalog. The book has a hard cover, 152 pages, and a size of 27 x 21 cm. Fans who don’t know French could enjoy this book as well because it is bilingual in both English and French.
Other Exhibitions
Below are a list of other exhibitions Invader was involved in at the Le Feuvre & Roze gallery.
